Why 99% of Students Fail To Clear UPSC Civil Service Exam

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Service exam is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. Every year, thousands of students appear for the exam with the dream of becoming a government officer.

However, only a small fraction of these students are able to clear the exam and secure a seat in the highly coveted Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), or any of the other civil services.

So why do so many students fail to clear the UPSC Civil Service exam? Here are some of the reasons:

Not reading the syllabus:

Many students do not pay attention to the UPSC syllabus and instead focus on reading too many books or joining coaching institutes. However, the UPSC syllabus is the most important tool for preparation, as it provides a clear roadmap for what topics need to be studied. Without a thorough understanding of the syllabus, it is impossible to prepare effectively for the exam.

Not decoding the syllabus:

Even if students read the syllabus, they often fail to decode it and break it down into micro-topics. This makes it difficult to plan their preparation and prioritize which topics to focus on.

Ignoring NCERT books:

The NCERT books are considered to be the most important source of study material for the UPSC Civil Service exam. However, many students ignore these books and instead make notes on them, which is a waste of time. NCERT books provide a clear and concise overview of the topics covered in the syllabus and should be given priority during preparation.

Reading too many books:

Some students make the mistake of reading too many books, which can lead to confusion and a lack of focus. It is important to select a few high-quality books that cover the UPSC syllabus and stick to them during the preparation period.

Reading Blogs of Toppers:

Many students read the blogs of toppers and try to emulate their strategies, which can lead to confusion and a lack of focus on their own strengths and weaknesses. It is important to develop a strategy that works for you, rather than copying the strategies of others.

Becoming a fan of toppers and teachers:

Some students become fans of toppers and teachers, rather than remaining a student. This can lead to a lack of motivation and a lack of focus on self-improvement. It is important to remain humble and focused on your own preparation, rather than becoming a fan of others.

Ignoring UPSC Previous Year Questions:

The UPSC Civil Service exam consists of three stages – the Prelims, the Mains, and the Interview. The Prelims consists of multiple choice questions, and the Mains consists of subjective questions. Many students ignore the UPSC previous year questions, which are a valuable source of practice and provide insights into the types of questions asked in the exam.

Ignoring The Importance Of Coaching:

Some toppers have emphasized the importance of self-study, which has led some students to ignore the role of coaching institutes in their preparation. However, coaching institutes provide expert guidance and a structured approach to preparation, which is invaluable for many students.

Internet is Full of Contents:

The internet is a vast source of information, but it can also be overwhelming for students preparing for the UPSC Civil Service exam. Many students spend too much time browsing the internet and getting confused by the wealth of information available. It is important to be selective and prioritize high-quality study material over quantity.

Finding the best approach:

Many students spend a lot of time looking for the best approach, but there isn’t one.
