New Year Resolutions For IAS/IPS/IFS Aspirants

Your productivity can increase, and certain resolutions can even transform your life! For UPSC CSE candidates, this is accurate.

These 12 IAS/IPS aspirant resolutions can do wonders in the coming year!

IAS/IPS aspirants are expected to have strong willpower to make risky judgements and maintain concentration on them as future civil employees.

1. Invest More on 3Ts – Textbooks, Test Series, and Techniques

The core concept of the TTT Approach is to invest in 3 ‘T’s – Text-books, Test Series, and Techniques.

Video Classes: The easiest way to cover the entire UPSC Prelims and Mains GS syllabus in the shortest time.

Prelims Test Series: The best Mock Exams you ever get for practice for UPSC Prelims.

Intelligent Elimination Techniques (IETs): 40 IETs to solve difficult questions using logic and common sense. Don’t be reluctant to invest your time, money and energy in the 3Ts. These three ‘Ts’ are the tools for you to succeed in UPSC Civil Services Exam.

If you are not investing enough in these resources now, you will have to spend more time, money, and energy in the subsequent years. Earlier you realise this, the better.

2. Be More Organised

In the online age of IAS preparation, the most difficult thing is to be organised. You get thousands of forwards from Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook, and so on. But once materials accumulate, it turns counter-productive.

Organise your online materials neatly in different folders for easy navigation. Keep your books and surroundings neat. Make a proper ‘To-Do list’. And most importantly, follow a timetable.

3. Give priority to topics mentioned in the UPSC CSE syllabus

Take a strong resolution that you will stick to the UPSC CSE syllabus. Going behind everything under the Sun will exhaust you very soon.

Stop downloading everything you see on the internet. Take a printout of the UPSC syllabus – Prelims, Mains and Interview, and paste it on your walls.

4. Stop Procrastinating

The biggest barrier that keeps most people from reaching their goals is the desire to relax and do something fun instead of working hard. Learn to prioritize. Be punctual. That will create wonders..

5. Utilize Your Free Time More Effectively

If you get free time while waiting for a bus or travel by train, you can read notes from your mobile. Or you can take Online Mock Exams. You can learn a new topic by solving 1 MCQ. Every bit of knowledge matters!

6. Start Practising Mock Exams Daily

Photo copies of mock exams won’t help like timed mock exams. So don’t rely on them much.

Take at least two Legacy IAS online mock tests every week, simulating exam conditions. Revise already taken exams and previous year questions for at least 1 hour daily.

If you haven’t enrolled for Legacy IAS Online Prelims Test Series, enroll now!

7. Read More Books

If you haven’t finished NCERTs yet, finish them at the earliest. NCERT books, NIOS books, IGNOU books etc are very easy to study and has authentic information. At least finish NCERTs by next month.

Then invest more in standard text-books. As it is clear from recent trends, you need extensive reading to score well in UPSC Prelims and Mains. Get books which will save you time. You can buy books from this list of recommended UPSC books.

8. Develop Exam Skills

Exam skills are crucial for success in Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Knowledge alone is not sufficient.

For Prelims, learn at least 20 Intelligent Elimination Techniques.

For Mains, learn how to write a great answer. Good writing skills are necessary for UPSC CSE Mains. Make it a habit to write model answers of previous year UPSC questions, and get evaluated by peers or experts. Writing improves your clarity of thinking.

For Interview, improve communication skills. Practice speaking quality English. Read newspapers and listen to the news – AIR, and RajyaSabha TV. Develop a good vocabulary. This helps a lot.

9. Stop the habit of checking your mobile phones frequently

Mobile phones are the biggest distraction for UPSC aspirants. Stop checking for WhatsApp or Facebook messages every minute.  Keep your mobile phone away while studying from books. Snooze all unnecessary notifications/alerts except those from UPSC Apps. This would improve your productivity significantly.

Take a resolution that you will spend time on social media only for a maximum of 30 minutes per day in the new year.

Use mobile phones mainly for learning purposes (Eg: Legacy IAS test App).

10. Revise, revise and revise!

Usually, aspirants read and lot but revise little. But the key to a powerful memory is revision.

Revise whatever you study in a day before you go to bed. Also revise the same, the next day before you start. Also, make sure you revise on weekends and month-ends. This will work magic, and you become an expert in whatever you studied.

11. Walk the talk

Set your goals and strictly follow it. If you have planned to study for 7-8 hours, follow it don’t lapse it to 4-5 hours or 3-4 hours.

If your checklist says reading the newspaper every day and to make notes out of it, do so and don’t switch or be convenient saying reading newspaper is enough.

The moment you make a pause in following your checklists, your resolution falls apart, so if you have made a word then be your word and honour your word.

12. Constancy is the Willpower

If you honour your word then consistency follows it, a pause in following your checklist creates a loophole and which is the root of lack of willpower.

A study says that for a person it minimum takes 21 days to get adapted to a new habit, keep this in mind, whenever you are procrastinating your schedule tell yourself 21 days to get into this and start watering your checklists that will reap as willpower and consistency.

Wish you all the best!
