Context:
The Supreme Court revoked the one-year suspension of 12 MLAs from the Maharashtra Assembly, calling it an “irrational” act that would impact the democratic set-up, leave constituencies unrepresented and help governments on a “thin majority” manipulate numbers.

About Tipu Sultan
- Born in November 1750.
- He was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore.
- He was Haidar Ali’s son and a great warrior, also known as the Tiger of Mysore.
- He was fluent in Arabic, Persian, Kanarese and Urdu.
- He was a great lover of democracy and a great diplomat.
- He supported the French soldiers at Seringapatam in setting up a Jacobin Club in 179.
- He organised his army on the European model with Persian words of command and was well aware of naval force.
- He planted the Tree of Liberty at Seringapatam.
- He was defeated in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War and died on 4th May 1799, in Srirangapatna, located in the present-day Mandya district of Karnataka.
Tipu Sultan – Important Developments
- Tipu introduced a number of administrative innovations during his rule
- New land revenue system which initiated the growth of Mysore silk industry.
- New coinage system a new Mauludi lunisolar calendar were introduced.
- Military weapon named Mysorean Rockets was successfully used against the British East India Company during the 1780s and 1790s. This technology came into the hands of the British which later on resulted in the development of Congreve rockets.
- Embraced western military methods like artillery and rockets alongside traditional Indian weapons including war elephants, he ensured his forces could overwhelm his Indian rivals
Anglo Mysore Wars
First Anglo Mysore War (1767 – 1769)
- The first Anglo Mysore war was fought between the Kingdom of Mysore (under Hyder Ali) and the British East India Company, which also had the assistance of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
- It ended with the Treaty of Madras.
Second Anglo Mysore War (1780 – 1784)
- At the Battle of Porto Novo, Hyder Ali was defeated by British Commander Sir Eyre Coote. This war was part of the Second Anglo Mysore War.
- It ended with the Treaty of Mangalore.
Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790 -1792)
- This war started when the ally of the British, the ruler of Travancore, was attacked by Tipu Sultan.
- It ended with the Treaty of Seringapatam.
- Tipu was defeated.
Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1798 – 1799)
- The Kingdom of Mysore was attacked from four different sides.
- Northern part of Mysore saw the invasion of the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad.
- The final battle, the Siege of Seringapatam, resulted in the complete defeat of Mysore Kingdom.
- Tipu Sultan died in the war.
- The Mysore kingdom was restored to the Wodeyar Dynasty by a way of the subsidiary alliance.
